Regional
IASC Advocacy Group
The regional IASC Advocacy group was initiated to ensure that
the humanitarian imperatives across the region are adequately
identified and highlighted.
The Regional IASC group, comprised of UN Agencies and NGOs work
together to raise awareness and advocate on humanitarian
concerns, such as food security, health, water and sanitation,
refugees and internally displaced people, HIV/AIDS etc.
The group identifies and develops strategies and activities to
bring the
humanitarian agenda to the fore through audio visual materials,
websites, press conferences and social mobilisation campaigns,
etc.
Should your agency or organisation wish to join the group,
please contact
the Regional Office for Southern Africa UN: Office for the
Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

RIACSO provides support to national efforts
addressing the southern African triple threat of food insecurity,
weakened capacity for governance and HIV/AIDS and ensures cohesion and
complementarity of the effort at a regional level. In addition, RIACSO
supports the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Humanitarian Needs
in Southern Africa, Mr. James Morris, in his mandate to raise awareness
of the situation and its underlying causes and provide recommendations
on how to strengthen the response and mobilise donor support. |

REGIONAL OVERVIEW
|
|
The
regional food security situation is mixed. More than
five million people in drought-stricken Lesotho,
Swaziland, Zimbabwe and southern Mozambique are
facing severe food shortages,
which will peak in the first three months of 2008.
The next main harvest is not expected until April.
Meanwhile countries that have experienced more
favourable weather, including northern Mozambique,
Malawi, Zambia and Angola, have had relatively good
harvests. |
