At regional level, international agencies and cooperating
partners are coordinating their assistance efforts to the southern
Africa region through a regional coordination platform for avian and
human influenza pandemic, operating from Johannesburg, South Africa.
The platform is chaired by FAO, while OCHA provides secretarial
support. The platform is part of the UN System Influenza
Coordination (UNSIC) pandemic preparedness structures and functions
as a regional UNSIC hub. Similar hubs have been or are being
established in other parts of the world, including Nairobi, Dakar,
Egypt, Bangkok, Panama and Geneva. The platform works closely
together with and in support of the Southern African Development
Community (SADC) AHI task team and covers the following countries:
Angola, Botswana, Comoros, DRC, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi,
Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles , South Africa,
Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
