South African Weather Service (SAWS), Seasonal Forecast for Southern Africa, December 2006
The recent atmospheric circulation and precipitation patterns indicate moderate El Niņo conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Recent observations and the majority of forecasts indicate that El Niņo conditions should intensify during the next 3 months and will likely continue into autumn 2007.

The USAID FEWS-NET Africa Weather Hazard Benefits Assessment for 14 - 20 December 2006
Although there has been a slight amount of cooling in the eastern tropical Pacific, sea surface temperatures remain well above normal across most of the basin. Positive ENSO conditions are expected to remain in place through the end of the southern Africa growing season.

Climate patterns across the equatorial Pacific over the last 1-2 months have developed a notable tendency toward El Niño conditions. There is general agreement that the development of a weak to moderate basin-wide El Niño is now likely and that such an event would persist into early 2007.

The northern parts of the SADC region (DRC, northeastern part of Angola, northern Tanzania, most of northern Zambia, southern Malawi and part of northern Mozambique) have an increased chance of receiving normal to above-normal rainfall during the October–December 2006 season.

Meteosat Rainfall Estimation (RFE) imagery is an automated (computer-generated) product which uses Meteosat infrared data, rain gauge reports from the global telecommunications system, and microwave satellite observations within an algorithm to provide RFE in mm at an approximate horizontal resolution of 10 km.
